Felipe’s Taqueria - Cambridge, MA

Upon first glance, entering Felipe’s Taqueria reminds you of a less-frequented and cleaner Anna’s Taqueria. However, the food at Felipe’s is vastly superior to Anna’s Taqueria in every way (if you want to see my review of Anna’s – go to the Burrito METAreview). There are three reasons why I love Felipe’s Taqueria:

  1. Salsa Bar – It’s not the greatest salsa bar I’ve ever had, but it has some interesting salsas to complement your burrito. Beats Cholula any day…

  2. Available seating – every Anna’s I’ve ever been to is packed with college kids who insist on perpetuating the myth that Anna’s Taqueria is good. You can either sit in Felipe’s, or elsewhere in the Garage in Harvard Square.

  3. Random Harvard Conversations – the Harvard grads of the 80’s were the ones who screwed up our economy, but I love eavesdropping on the conversation of current Harvard students to predict how they might screw up America in 10-20 years.  I once heard a group of Harvard students discussing which one of their friends they would most like to eat (IF they were cannibals).  Hope for the future!

I got the standard grilled veggie burrito, which truly actualized the flavors of the vegetables into the burrito. Anna’s grilled veggie appeared to have tasty vegetables, but somehow in the burrito assembly, the flavors of the vegetables were not translated into a good burrito. The burrito at Felipe’s had a mixture of zucchini, squash, peppers, and broccoli that tasted great on its own, but when accented with the habanero salsa (from the aforementioned salsa bar) made one outstanding burrito. The guacamole was generously added and was passable (a flavor opportunity wasted, if you ask me). Overall, I give Felipe’s three cheese sandwiches for a solid burrito, though it would be nice if they would offer tofu or other alternatives to veggie, rice and beans in their burrito. I’ll give five cheese sandwiches to the next burrito establishments that includes seitan or gluten as an option!
